The Fascinating World of Festschrifts
Celebrating Linda C. Smith, the Renaissance Scholar of Library and information Science
November 11, 2023. Vol. 1, Issue 11.
Welcome new readers. Thank you readers for your insights and questions on Polymaths, Polystores, and Possiplex: Infophilia, Positive Psychology of Information. I also appreciate your sympathetic responses to the WWII Blimp Hangar Fire.
Today, we meet another living polymath, the library, and information sciences, interdisciplinary scholar Linda C. Smith, Professor Emerita, School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In the 1970s, Linda was already investigating the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for libraries and collecting competencies from the sciences, medicine, the humanities. We also take a peek into the fascinating world of festschrifts, an academic tradition dedicated to honoring the remarkable contributions of scholars, with a personal story about my participation in a festschrift project that began two years ago.
In September 2023, I celebrated Linda, who was also my doctoral advisor along with many generations of her students and colleagues, at a virtual festschrift symposium. Over 140 of us met together via Zoom to honor Linda. This symposium was the culmination of the Library Trends Linda C. Smith festschrift project that started in 2021. Library and Information Science, Interdisciplinary Perspectives: A Festschrift in Honor of Professor Linda C. Smith comprising Library Trends volume 71, issue 1, August 2022 was published with 8 papers by 10 authors - Eileen Abels, Rachel Applegate, Ryan Cordell, Melissa Cragin, Lynne Haworth, Ed Jones, Don Krummel, Tomas Lipinski, Carole Palmer, Melissa Wong- her former students or colleagues. It was co-edited by me and Martha Kyrillidou. For the symposium, many more former doctoral students - Jian Qin, Colin Rhinesmith, Bharat Mehra - served as panel moderators; Lorraine Haricombe and Michele Cloonan offered reflections. By the time she retired in 2019, Linda had served as doctoral dissertation chair for 46 doctoral students and served on ~130 committees. She was the top doctoral producing faculty in the field. These numbers do not include her advising, teaching, and impact on graduate MLS and Certificate of Advanced Studies students who altogether number in the thousands.
A festschrift - feast-script or festival writings - is celebratory writing, a scholarly tradition dedicated to honoring distinguished individuals for their remarkable contributions to academia and beyond. Often it is a published book or a special issue of a journal filled with scholarly essays, research papers, and personal tributes contributed by colleagues, friends, and former students. Each offering reflects the impact of the honoree on their field, the enduring friendships they've cultivated, and the knowledge they've shared. The first festschrift is often attributed to the German theologian Johann Gottfried Walther. In 1718, his colleagues and students published a collection of essays and writings in his honor on the occasion of his 68th birthday. This work is considered one of the earliest examples of a festschrift.
Festschrifts showcase the honoree’s work and the camaraderie and intellectual connections that thrive in scholarly circles. That’s why a festschrift is also called a "book of friends" – “liber amoricorum” in Latin.
Festschrifts showcase the honoree's work and the camaraderie and intellectual connections that thrive in scholarly circles. That’s why a festschrift is also called a book of friends —“liber amoricorum” in Latin. The act of making a festschrift is a celebrating of the mentorship, guidance, and inspiration of the scholar whose work has shaped the lives of those within a field. A festschrift sometimes may be a symposium amicorum, a coming together of friends and celebrating the scholar without a formal publication or book. (Festschriften is also used as the plural of festschrifts.)
For Linda, we 1) published a festschrift, 2) presented a special leather bound copy of it to her at a private event in Chicago with the ALA Annual Conference and the School of Information Sciences’ (iSchool) celebrations of their 130th anniversary and 75th anniversary of the PhD program, 3) created a festschrift website, and 4) held a virtual festschrift symposium. Below is the video (~17 min) of the presentation in Chicago.
The Linda C. Smith Festschrift Website is here and it includes the links to the published festschrift (available online on Project Muse), the presentation of a special copy of the festschrift on June 25 in Chicago (15 min. video above) and the Festschrift Virtual Symposium on Sept. 29. I invite you to browse the website’s brief notes and pictures on Linda’s research, teaching, and service and the virtual symposium program to understand Linda’s influence, and the paper highlights. The topics range from artificial intelligence, reference work, bibliographic searching, data curation, serials modeling / cataloging, accreditation, and copyright. To get a taste of Linda’s mentoring and intellectual connections you can watch the recording (2 hours). It is embedded on the festschrift website. If you need help or have any trouble with the video or the festschrift website please email librarytrends at illinois dot edu
In the introduction to the festschrift, we called Linda the renaissance scholar of LIS. She has been a leading and productive force for transformation contributing greatly to the field’s rejuvenation and rebirth from Library Science / LIS to the multidisciplinary information sciences and GLAM - art galleries, libraries, archives, and museum - professions. Linda is a living polymath as her record 50 years of scholarship show. Linda’s doctoral research, done in the 1970s at Syracuse University, was ahead of its time in investigating the potential of artificial intelligence for information retrieval. But very quickly, Linda soon also became one of the top researchers in very different sub disciplines. I first met Linda in 1992 and it was she who introduced me to hypertext and hypermedia, key parts of my own dissertation research. Linda also nurtured my sense of strong service and interdisciplinary, human-oriented problem-solving. Linda designed and led the innovative LEEP distance learning program.
Rather than repeat Linda’s accomplishments I will conclude with a few comments.
There are 257,000 (at least) festschrifts (items) in WorldCat, a testament to the widespread recognition of these special publications. Interestingly, an overwhelming majority of festschrifts are in honor of men, highlighting a historical trend in academic homage. Women are marginalized – why is this not a surprise? The tradition of festschrifts also varies widely across countries, disciplines, and publishers. It is very popular in Africa (where new literary forms are needed), Asia, and Europe (it’s traditional home). Festschrifts are gaining ground in the medical sciences in the US, especially the standalone festschrift symposia without an accompanying publication. Festschrifts appear to be very popular in LIS in India. Some publishers also appear to specialize in publishing festschrifts. Most don’t (may be changing as the open access revolution in scholarly communication continues).
In conclusion, I am grateful to be reconnected to my doctoral advisor. The intellectual connection is exhilarating. I invite you to visit the Linda C. Smith Festschrift website and learn more about an exemplary scholar and see a festschrift modeled. Lastly, I will note that a suggestion was made at our festschrift symposium that the information studies field needed more festschrifts for women (e.g. Kathleen de la Peña McCook) and men of non-European origin. Festschrifts and festschrift symposia can greatly improve human well-being in libraries and academia. Celebrations of the human love of information and making deep intellectual connections can heal organization climate, techno stress, and information overload challenges that are workplace realities. Here’s to more festschrifts!

The idea for the Linda C. Smith festschrift was originated by Clara Chu and Jaya Raju, Co-editors in chief of Library Trends. Library Trends is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, founded in 1952, and published for the School of Information Sciences by The Johns Hopkins University Press. For more than 70 years, Library Trends has explored critical trends in professional librarianship through practical applications, thorough analyses, and literature reviews. Print copies are available from Johns Hopkins University Press. Older issues, except for the last two years, are archived and available open access in IDEALS. Issues for the most recent two years, including the Festschrift, are available online for subscription through Project Muse.

I’ve a ton of stuff that I want to make into video shorts on Festschrifts / Festschriften.
In the meantime, thanks to Kathleen de la Peña McCook for asking me if I had a list of LIS festschrifts. Yes - sort of - below’s a partial list from WorldCat. I’ve yet to search the old and the new de Gruyter database International Annual Bibliography of Festschriften (this has after 1983) https://www.degruyter.com/database/ijbf/html?lang=en Plans are to make a LIS festchriften Zotero public database (if I don’t find de Gruyter) so others can add. English language. Due date: TBD. Comments welcome. Honoree name, sub-discipline browse displays? What else?
